GREEN FINGERS! TREE PLANTING

Ben helps one of the helpers to dig deep! now that's TEAM WORK!

Today, the middle syndicate took turns to go to the Glen reserve to plant trees.
We love trees! they give us air, shade, building materials, paper, warmth in winter with firewood. Trees can even be used in medicine!
We have to look after our trees and replace what we use!
We planted a range of plants. Kowhai, Kanuka, Akeake and a range of coastal tussocks and grasses.
We learnt how to plant a tree correctly.
We worked well as a team and did a superb job!

We learnt how to plant a tree correctly

We found heaps of big, fat, juicy Earthworms!

SCIENCE FAIR - Room 14 'FULL OF BEANS'

Room 14 embarked on a rather interesting science investigation in preparation for the school's Science Fair.
We wanted to find out.... 'Which beans create the most gas!?'

We had 4 test groups. Group 1 ate Cannellinni Beans, group 2 ate Baked Beans and group 3 ate Butter Beans.
We had one control group that ate no beans.
We tested over 2 days. Each child involved had to eat the same food for breakfast and brain food breaks.
They had to avoid gassy foods for lunch and dinner. We recorded our 'flatulence' (farts) on a fart chart from after we had eaten our ladle full of beans right through till 7pm each night.
Our results were astounding! Cannellinni Beans were the gasiest bean!
We thought Baked Beans would be the most gas causing bean!
You know what they say..... 'Baked Beans are good for the heart, Baked Beans make you fart!'
'Baked beans make you fart, Baked Beans are good for the heart, the more you fart, the better you feel, so eat Baked Beans for every meal!'

We learnt about the process of a scientific investigation and had fun!
We have even been picked to compete in the regional science fair in September!

Feeding time at the zoo!

Yum yum! Christopher enjoys his share of beans!

Our completed exhibit. Phew!

What is in Beans that make you fart??
Sam & Laycee did some research and discovered that Beans contain a type of sugar called 'Oligosaccharides'
Our bodies are unable to digest these sugars! so.... the Bacteria in our intestines have a good feast on these sugars. When they do, gas is created and ofcourse gas has to escape in the only way we know how!   Farting!
We are so clever!

RUGBY WORLD CUP FEVER!

We had an ART DAY !
We went to the art room and made our own banners and flags to show our support for the upcoming Rugby World Cup!
They look AWESOME!
If you get a chance, come to our class and have a look at the finished products!
GO ALL BLACKS!

Measuring Madness

Room 14 have been learning about 'Measurement' in Maths.
We received a letter from a grumpy Captain Hook!
He told us that Peter Pan had destroyed all of the ships in his fleet!
He asked us for our help!
He wanted us to draw a new fleet of pirate ships. They had to be measured carefully to the exact specifications.
We worked in groups.
Each group had a leader, a measurer, a checker and a reporter.
We worked cooperatively in our groups and drew fabulous pirate ships!
If you go outside Room 14 you might still see them on the concrete!

We hope it doesn't rain before you get a chance to see them!
