BULA VINAKA!

We are learning about 'Fiji' this term. Deb's Aunty Wendy went to Fiji in the school holidays to help provide medical care to people in a village in Fiji. She asked us if we would like to write letters to the school children, so we did! We popped in some surprises for them like stickers and balloons.
GUESS WHAT????  We have just received some letters back from them.
Come into our classroom and read the letters they sent! They are awesome!
Wendy is coming to our class next week to show us photos of her trip to Fiji!
We want to learn lots of things about Fiji!

Are there Crocodiles in Fiji?  Do they have poisonous snakes? What are their classrooms like? What foods do they eat? the list goes on! We will have fun this term!
Check out our photos of us reading our letters :)
This is a traditional, Flax woven mat that the people in Fiji gave to Wendy as a thank you gift. She has lent it to us for a while. It's beautiful! and its worth about $650 so we have to be super careful with it. Fijian people are so clever! They are so fast at weaving, one of these mats can be completed in one day! phew!

Here we are with the letters we received from children in Fiji!

We can't wait to write back to them! we are going to put together some special boxes to send to them.
We will also send them some photographs of us with our letters. We look forward to learning more about Fiji!

BONEY BAKING!

We have been learning about the human body this term.
This week we have been learning about our BONES!
We had fun baking our own bones using salt dough.
It was awesome to  have parents in the classroom to help!
Thanks Parents and helpers!
You could try this at home.......
Here is an easy recipe.

Ingredients:
4 Cups of Flour
1 Cup of Salt
1 1/2 Cups of hot tap water
2 teaspoons of vegetable oil (optional)
Instructions:
Combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl,
Gradually add the water until the dough becomes elastic
Add the vegetable oil
If your dough is too sticky, add more flour.... too crumbly? add more water.
Once you've got the consistency that you can work with, bring on the fun!
Add some food colouring if you want fun colours!
Either air dry or bake at 180 degrees until hard or lightly brown. (Keep an eye on them)
You can paint your creations afterwards, then seal them with a clear varnish!

OUR HAKAMAN!

This is our 'Hakaman!'
We are proud All Black supporters!
We have created this Hakaman to enter into the 'Stand in Black' Hakaman competition.
The All Blacks will be judging the entries and if we are lucky enough to win we will get some of the All Blacks from the 2011 World Cup Team come to visit us at school...... but wait..... there's more!
We could win $5000 of Adidas sports Equipment for our school.
Keep your fingers and toes crossed for us!
We have to send our entry to Auckland to be judged.

We made our huge mural by pasting photographs in the background of our artworks that we did last week of our favourite All Black.
We then got Deb to take photos of us doing Haka poses in our black T'shirts to collage the arms and legs.
We painted the All Black uniform correctly including all of the important logos.
We had a 'Pukana' competition to see who could do the most convincing 'Pukana'
Matt was the winner! so his head was photographed and used for our Hakaman's face.
We are proud of our hard work! It took us a long time to complete! but we persevered and DID IT!

CUTE & CLEVER PETS!

Sam bought his cute cat 'Connie' to visit us.
She is 8 months old and was adopted from the SPCA.
Not only is she very cute and curious! she is one clever cat.
She can play fetch with herself by rolling a plastic ball down  the stairs. She runs after it, fetches it and brings it to the top of the stairs, then away she goes again!
Hmmmmmm perhaps she thinks she is actually a dog Sam!

Sophia bought her clever pet Juno to meet us too. He is 8 months old and we were amazed at the tricks that Sophia and her family have taught him!
He can sit, Lie down, roll over, shake hands and can even give a high-five!
Juno was adopted from the SPCA.
